Austria wanted to join NATO

Austria is considering abandoning its neutral status and joining NATO, as stated by the country's Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger in an interview with the German publication Die Welt.
"It is obvious that neutrality by itself cannot ensure our security," said the minister.
She cited growing global instability as the reason for this decision.
"Austria's protection can be guaranteed by investments in defense and strengthening partnerships," Meinl-Reisinger believes.
She noted that discussion on this issue could be productive, despite the current lack of parliamentary and public consensus regarding NATO membership.
Recall that Austria adopted the status of permanent neutrality in 1955, and this principle is enshrined in the country's Constitution. However, the country regularly participates in cooperation programs with the alliance.
