An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 was registered near the Tokara Islands in southwestern Japan. This was reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
No tsunami threat was declared in connection with the earthquake. There were no casualties.
In the area of the Tokara Islands, increased seismic activity has been observed over the past week and a half. During this time, more than 1,180 earthquakes with a magnitude above 1 have occurred here, including several strong ones with magnitudes from 5 to 5.5.
Local seismologists note that the area is located at the junction of tectonic plates, which leads to increased seismic activity. There are several small settlements on the Tokara Islands, with a total population of about 650 people.
