Secret of maintaining mental clarity in old age revealed
Scientists have discovered that a diet high in fiber and certain micronutrients is associated with healthier brain aging in people over 65 years of age. Researchers from the University of South Dakota came to this conclusion after analyzing the diet and cognitive indicators of elderly adults. The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Nutrients.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Nutrients, 72 people aged 65 and older participated in the study. The analysis showed that higher memory and thinking scores were characteristic of participants whose diet contained more fiber, unsaturated fats, as well as vitamins A and E, magnesium and potassium. Carotenoids - pigments that give fruits and vegetables their bright coloration - also showed a positive connection with cognitive functions.
At the same time, scientists identified a pronounced deficiency of nutrients: most participants were not getting important elements for their age, including fiber, potassium, calcium, and a number of vitamins. Meanwhile, high consumption of refined grain products - such as white bread, pasta, and certain types of cereals - was associated with worse memory and thinking indicators. The authors note that, despite the observational nature of the study and the use of self-reports, the data obtained are consistent with known biological mechanisms, including the anti-inflammatory effect of fiber-rich foods.
