Natural remedy found for hormonal hair loss
The compound ginsenoside Rf from Korean ginseng has shown the ability to protect hair from hormonal loss. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Sejong University. The research results are published in the journal Industrial Crops and Products (ICP).
In experiments on mice with a model of androgenetic alopecia - the most common form of baldness - taking ginsenoside Rf significantly improved hair growth even with a suppressed hair cycle. The animals showed an increased number of hair follicles, larger follicle size, and thicker hair. Tissue analysis showed restoration of normal structure and activity of hair bulbs.
Researchers also figured out the mechanism of action of the substance. Ginsenoside Rf reduces the activity of androgen receptors - proteins through which male hormones trigger the process of hair thinning and loss. The compound accelerates the destruction of these receptors inside cells, thereby weakening the hormonal signals that lead to alopecia. Such a mechanism has not been previously described in hair loss studies.
The authors note that the results were obtained on a preclinical model and have not yet been confirmed in human studies. Nevertheless, the work points to the promise of ginsenoside Rf as a basis for creating natural remedies for preventing hair loss and products for maintaining scalp health.
