The doctor explained how many calories a person burns spending the entire day on the couch

Even a day spent at home on a laptop or on the couch does not mean a complete absence of energy expenditure. The body continues to burn calories to maintain vital processes, including the functioning of internal organs and maintaining body temperature.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," neurogastroenterologist Andrey Simakov explained that a significant portion of energy is spent on maintaining body temperature. According to him, humans remain warm-blooded organisms, so metabolism continues even with minimal physical activity.

At the same time, the common belief that the body automatically begins to burn significantly more calories in winter is not entirely accurate. A substantial increase in energy expenditure occurs primarily in situations where a person is actually cold — for example, spending a long time outdoors in cold weather or living in a poorly heated space.

According to the specialist, the basal energy expenditure is calculated based on sex, age, and body weight. At a younger age, it may be somewhat higher, while after the age of 30, metabolism may gradually slow down. A more noticeable decline, the doctor noted, is usually observed after the age of 60.

As an example, Simakov cited a man weighing about 80 kg: even at rest, his body can expend approximately 1,700–1,800 kcal per day. For a woman weighing about 55 kg, this figure is approximately 1,300–1,400 kcal. With physical activity, the energy spent on movement is added to the basal expenditure.

Body weight also directly affects the amount of energy expended. The greater a person's weight, the more calories the body requires even at rest. For instance, a man weighing about 140 kg can burn approximately 2,600–2,700 kcal per day without physical exertion.

Thus, the absence of workouts or walks does not mean that the body stops expending energy. However, movement, physical work, and regular exercise can significantly increase the total daily calorie expenditure.
