Doctors warned about the danger of feijoa jam

Feijoa jam can have both positive and negative effects on the body depending on individual characteristics. With moderate consumption and proper preparation, this traditional dessert can be beneficial, however, some categories of people should be careful, warns Russian gastroenterologist Evgeny Belousov.
"Jam should be avoided in case of diabetes due to its high sugar content. Even when replacing sugar with sweeteners - the fructose from feijoa increases glycemia. Additionally, excess easily digestible carbohydrates contribute to fat accumulation. Due to its iodine content, feijoa is contraindicated for hyperthyroidism. It's also important to remember about possible allergies. Stomach ulcers or gastritis with high acidity in the acute phase can also be a limitation when consuming jam: acid and fiber can irritate the mucous membrane," explained the doctor.
The specialist recommends moderation: adults are advised to consume no more than 1-2 teaspoons per day, and children over 3 years old - one and a half teaspoons no more than 2-3 times a week.
"There are benefits too. Thanks to the preserved fiber and pectin, the jam gently stimulates intestinal peristalsis and helps eliminate toxins. Even after cooking, flavonoids remain, which reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. It's a good source of iodine (to a lesser extent than in fresh form), which is especially relevant for residents of regions with iodine deficiency. The remnants of vitamin C and phytonutrients support the body's defensive functions. With a reasonable amount of sugar, feijoa jam is a healthier alternative to industrial desserts," said the doctor.
