Doctor explained sudden cramping of the stomach during stress

Stress and strong emotions can directly affect the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract - this is why many people experience stomach "twisting" before important events. The reason lies in the close connection between the intestines and the brain.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Moslenta", gastroenterologist Sofia Kardashova explained that during stress, the brain signals the adrenal glands, which in response produce the hormones cortisol and adrenaline. In the short term, this helps the body mobilize, however, with chronic stress, such hormones begin to cause harm.

According to the doctor, the gastrointestinal tract suffers first. Spasms of the stomach and intestinal muscles may occur, accompanied by aching or sharp pain, bloating, and changes in stool frequency. Intestinal motility disorders are also possible, leading to constipation or diarrhea.

In addition, warning signals include changes in appetite, flatulence, and heartburn. Kardashova noted that with prolonged stress, immunity may also decrease, since up to 80 percent of immune cells are concentrated in the intestines.

To reduce the negative impact of stress on the digestive system, the specialist recommends using breathing techniques, consulting a psychologist if necessary, and establishing proper nutrition and daily routine. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe medication support to normalize the digestive system.
