Identified: 4 Simple Habits That Rejuvenate the Brain by 8 Years
About premature brain aging, people talk a lot nowadays. It is linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. And, naturally, many want to make their brain younger.
Brain youth is the key to its health. After all, the older the organ, the more it is susceptible to the development of pathological conditions, such as, for example, dementia. Naturally, many want to make their brain younger and healthier. Experts note that four simple habits help with this.
Specialists from the University of Florida found that optimism, healthy and sufficiently deep sleep, the ability to cope with stress, and strong social support are associated with brain rejuvenation. This became clear from MRI images. Moreover, these habits help the brain become eight years younger.
As part of the scientific work, data from 128 adults in middle and old age, living on four continents, were studied. They were observed for four years. Almost 70% of participants were women. Many of them suffered from chronic pain associated with knee osteoarthritis.
Using advanced MRI methods and machine learning, the brain age of each participant was assessed. Then it was compared with the actual age of the test participants. Those who reported a healthy combination of psychological factors and proper lifestyle had brains that looked eight years younger.
With difficulties and chronic pain, the brain looked older. Low levels of education and income, as well as social disadvantage, also negatively affected its age.
Other factors for healthier brain aging include quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy weight.
