# Does Coffee Slow Down Aging: Results of a New Study
Millions of people around the world start their morning with a cup of coffee — whether it's espresso, americano, or latte. Beyond its energizing effect, the beverage has long attracted the attention of scientists due to its possible impact on health and aging processes.
As reported by BAKU.WS citing "Rambler," a study published in the journal Microbial Cell showed that caffeine may be linked to longevity mechanisms. Scientists discovered that this substance activates the enzyme AMPK — the so-called "guardian of metabolism." It helps cells adapt to energy stress and participates in DNA damage repair, which is important for preserving cellular functions with age.
Previously, it was believed that caffeine directly affected the TORC1 signaling system associated with cell growth. However, new data show that the effect occurs through the activation of AMPK. Although the experiments were conducted on yeast models, scientists consider this an important step toward understanding how coffee components may influence aging processes at the molecular level.
Coffee contains not only caffeine but also numerous bioactive substances — antioxidants, polyphenols, and chlorogenic acids. They help protect cells from oxidative stress, which is considered one of the factors in aging and the development of age-related diseases.
Some large observational studies have also linked moderate coffee consumption with "healthy aging." For instance, data presented at the American Society for Nutrition conference showed that middle-aged women who consumed about 315 mg of caffeine per day (approximately two to four cups of coffee) had a slightly higher probability of aging well. Notably, this effect was observed specifically for coffee, rather than for decaffeinated beverages, tea, or cola.
At the same time, scientists emphasize that these are merely statistical associations, not direct causation. Aging processes are influenced by numerous factors — lifestyle, diet, and physical activity.
Additionally, excessive caffeine consumption can cause insomnia, anxiety, and rapid heartbeat. Therefore, specialists do not yet consider coffee as an anti-aging remedy and note that additional clinical studies are needed.
