Doctor debunked the myth about sweets as a cause of diabetes

Russian general practitioner Natalia Leontyeva revealed the complex nature of diabetes, emphasizing that this disease develops not due to a single cause, but as a result of a combination of various factors.
The specialist refuted the common misconception that high sugar consumption directly causes diabetes. Although excessive consumption of sweets can indeed contribute to weight gain and the development of obesity, thereby increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes, it alone is not the only cause of the disease. Notably, diabetes is often diagnosed in people with normal body weight, which is associated with factors such as genetic predisposition and autoimmune processes.
Leontyeva also noted that a sedentary lifestyle significantly reduces the body's sensitivity to insulin and contributes to weight gain. Age is also a significant factor - after 45 years, the risk of developing diabetes increases markedly. Women should pay special attention to their health after pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes, as this condition increases the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
"It is believed that diabetes occurs only in people who are overweight. Although obesity is one of the main risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes, diabetes can also occur in people with normal weight. This is due to genetic predisposition, autoimmune diseases, and other factors," explains the therapist.
In conclusion, the doctor emphasized the critical importance of a healthy lifestyle and regular preventive examinations to minimize the risk of developing diabetes and maintaining overall health.
