In an effort to limit the impact of aggressive factors on the skin, many people overlook one of the most dangerous - poor-quality cosmetics, which in some cases can even increase the risk of cancer development. Cosmetic physician Anastasia Kostenko warned about this in a conversation with "Gazeta.Ru".

First of all, it is necessary to pay attention to the composition of the product. As the doctor pointed out, manufacturers, in an effort to reduce costs, often use low-quality raw materials and dangerous components.

Aggressive surfactants and sulfates (for example, SLS/SLES). They destroy the lipid barrier - the natural protective barrier of the skin. As a result, a person does not get healthy shine and radiance, but a feeling of tightness, dehydration, increased sensitivity, and flaking.

Synthetic preservatives (parabens, formaldehyde). They are contained in many cosmetic products, but in high concentrations can cause severe allergic reactions, dermatitis, and even have carcinogenic potential (increase the risk of cancer development).

Mineral (technical) oils and silicones. They create an impermeable film on the skin surface that clogs pores. As a result, comedones and inflammatory elements (pimples, acne) begin to appear on the skin.

Synthetic fragrances and dyes. They are among the main provocateurs of contact allergic dermatitis. It manifests as redness, itching, rash, and swelling.

Heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium). Often found in uncertified decorative cosmetics, especially in long-lasting lipsticks and eyeshadows. They have a toxic effect, accumulating in the body for years.

Secondly, as the specialist warned, in the era of marketplaces and online stores, storage conditions for cosmetic products are very often not observed, and there is also a lack of quality control and certification.

"And, thirdly, poor-quality cosmetics often have ineffective compositions. Sometimes in the description of a product, you can see that it contains plant extracts, acids, or retinol. However, the concentration of this substance is not even specified, which is why the patient simply does not receive a positive effect from using the product," added Kostenko.

To protect yourself from poor-quality cosmetics, the doctor gave several recommendations. First, buy cosmetics only from trusted places: official boutiques, pharmacies, large chain stores. Avoid questionable online platforms and markets where there is a high risk of encountering counterfeits and low-quality goods.

Second, carefully study the composition. Prefer products with quality oils, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, antioxidants. Avoid products with a long list of incomprehensible chemical names at the beginning of the composition.

Third, pay attention to the packaging. Quality cosmetics have clear labeling, expiration date (often applied by laser or on the bottom of the box) and protective membranes. And finally, trust professionals - a specialist will help you choose safe and effective products that are right for you, the doctor summarized.
