Building of university to be demolished in Baku

The building of the Azerbaijan International University (AIU), which ceased operations in 2010, is planned to be demolished in connection with the construction of the "Darnagyul" electric depot by the "Baku Metro" CJSC.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Teleqraf, the project implementation includes the relocation of more than 450 green plantings from the construction zone. Although there are few trees in the area affected by the construction, a large green zone is located precisely on the territory of the former university, where hundreds of trees grow.
It is assumed that a significant portion of the trees and shrubs to be relocated are in the AIU courtyard, which indicates the upcoming demolition of the building itself.
The press secretary of "Baku Metro" CJSC, Bakhtiyar Mammadov, confirmed that 464 green plantings will be relocated from the territory.
"This land has officially belonged to the Baku Metro since 1986. At that time, there was neither a university nor other buildings here. The AIU building appeared later, already on a plot that was always considered our property. We just fenced off our territory," Mammadov stated.
AIU was founded in 1997, but its activities were terminated on September 1, 2010, by order of former Minister of Education Misir Mardanov. After the closure of the university, its rector Elshad Abdullayev left Azerbaijan and currently lives in France.
