UN-Habitat has grouped its urban planning recommendations into six thematic areas
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has grouped recommendations in the field of urban planning and housing policy into six thematic areas covering environmental sustainability, human rights, and regional development.
As Report informs, this was stated by UN-Habitat representative Ombretta Tempra during WUF13.
According to her, the recommendations address key factors in shaping environmentally sustainable and crisis-resilient housing systems.
In particular, one of the areas is the integration of a human rights-based approach into environmental policy and housing strategies with the aim of simultaneously advancing the right to adequate housing and the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
Another area identified is strengthening institutional capacity, improving coordination, joint decision-making, implementation mechanisms, monitoring, and accountability in the field of sustainable housing.
Tempra also pointed to the need to mobilize and align various funding sources to expand sustainable, equitable, and risk-resilient housing systems. According to her, the greatest gap between financing and scaling opportunities arises precisely in the context of sustainable housing.
Among other recommendations, the UN-Habitat representative highlighted strengthening knowledge ecosystems in the field of sustainable housing, particularly in developing countries, promoting public awareness and behavioral transformation, as well as reducing environmental and housing pressures caused by rapid and uncoordinated urban expansion.
