On May 20, the seventh session of the Security Dialogue between Azerbaijan and the European Union (EU) was held in Baku.

As reported by AZERTAC, the participants held a constructive exchange of views on the current state of relations between Azerbaijan and the EU, on foreign policy and security policy issues of mutual interest. They welcomed the recent intensification of high-level contacts, including the visits of President of the European Council António Costa and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas to Azerbaijan and their meetings with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and reaffirmed the shared interest in further developing bilateral relations.

The sides emphasized the importance of continuing negotiations on the new "Partnership Priorities" and a new bilateral agreement. They also noted the importance of continuing regular dialogue within the framework of the existing Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Azerbaijan and the EU.

The participants discussed regional and international processes, including geopolitical processes and foreign policy, connectivity, energy security, and the Middle Corridor. The EU noted Azerbaijan's role as an important partner in terms of regional connectivity and diversification of energy sources and emphasized the importance of sustainable and cost-effective rules-based cooperation.

The EU reaffirmed its support for humanitarian demining efforts in Azerbaijan and welcomed the continuation of cooperation in this area. As part of the visit on May 19, the EU delegation visited the Karabakh and East Zangazur economic regions, including the Aghdam district, and familiarized itself with the demining activities carried out by the Azerbaijani side.

The participants also exchanged views on the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The EU welcomed the progress achieved between Azerbaijan and Armenia in recent months, including confidence-building measures and the intensification of contacts, and called for the continuation of dialogue and practical cooperation in support of a lasting and durable peace.

The sides agreed to expand the format by renaming it the Azerbaijan-EU Political and Security Dialogue, reflecting the broader scope of bilateral relations and their strategic significance.

The session was co-chaired by Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev and Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service for Political Affairs Olaf Skoog.
