Will Mojtaba Khamenei attend his father's funeral?

The current Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, has informed officials of his desire to attend his father's funeral.

This was reported by the NYT, citing two IRGC officials and a person involved in the funeral planning.

According to the report, Mojtaba Khamenei wants to attend the funeral on July 9 in Mashhad and "recite the prayer for the deceased" over his father's body.

Security officials have so far rejected this plan due to concerns that Israel might "attempt to kill" him at the ceremony or "track his movements to his hiding place," the newspaper reported.
