Information about the frescoes and khachkars removed by Armenians from Khudavang has been entered into the Interpol database

After the occupation of the Kalbajar district, "restoration" work was also started at the Khudavang monastery.

This was stated to APA by Sabina Hajiyeva, Head of the State Service for the Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage of Azerbaijan.

According to her, the "restoration" work was carried out between 1997 and 2011 at the expense of the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian Apostolic Church.

"Since 2014, 'restoration' of the monastery's unique frescoes was also carried out. When leaving the Kalbajar district, the occupation forces looted the Khudavang monastery complex, transported crosses, bells and other elements belonging to the complex to the Republic of Armenia, including cutting frescoes from the walls and stealing them, which were subsequently displayed abroad at various foreign exhibitions as 'works of Armenian art.' In this regard, on October 9, 2025, information about frescoes and khachkars dismantled from the Khudavang monastery and illegally removed from the country's territory was entered into Interpol's 'Stolen Works of Art' database. This provides for international law enforcement mechanisms for the return of said artifacts to the Republic of Azerbaijan in the event they are discovered on the territory of one of the Interpol member states," the head of the state service emphasized.
