One of the most serious problems of the Caspian Sea is its shallowing. The decline in the level of the Caspian Sea has been ongoing for many years. Unfortunately, this process has noticeably accelerated recently, and the situation continues to deteriorate. A significant reduction in the water area is being observed. The total surface area of the sea has already decreased by more than 20 thousand square kilometers.

As reported by BAKU.WS, this was stated by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the Caspian Ecological Summit in Turkmenbashi.

The head of state emphasized that if the current trend continues, the consequences could be catastrophic in nature. He noted that the problem of shallowing has not only an ecological dimension. "The decline in sea level directly affects the interests of our states, impacts the lives of people in coastal areas, the economy, and transportation. We see how the coastline is retreating, the ecosystem is changing, and problems are arising in the operation of ports and other coastal infrastructure facilities. As a result of the decline in the Caspian Sea level, approximately 30 thousand hectares of dry land have formed in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian alone," said the President of Azerbaijan.
