Relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See (Vatican) are entering a new phase of intensification against the backdrop of the official visit of the Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, to our country.

This visit, which took place in June, once again underscored Baku's status as a global center of multiculturalism and tolerance, writes the newspaper "Kaspiy."

The key event of the cardinal's visit was the official reception on June 16 by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, during which the head of state presented the prefect with an official letter of invitation for Pope Leo XIV to visit Azerbaijan.

Dynamics of relations

The Vatican delegation's visit lasted until June 19 and demonstrated the strengthening of ties primarily in interreligious dialogue. It is worth noting that a Memorandum of Understanding was previously signed between Azerbaijan's State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations and the Vatican Dicastery.

Notably, during the meeting it was announced that a second Catholic church would be built in Azerbaijan. The first is the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baku.

In the sphere of humanitarian and cultural cooperation, the longstanding activities of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in the Vatican were particularly highlighted. As a reminder: the Foundation finances the restoration of major Christian monuments, including the Roman catacombs (of Saint Sebastian, Saint Commodilla) and exhibits of the Vatican Museums.

On the political track, the Vatican traditionally supports the peace agenda in the South Caucasus and the process of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Global dialogue between religions

The Vatican's great interest in our country is also evidenced by the fact that the delegation's visit was not limited to the capital alone. The distinguished guests visited key religious and historical sites of the country — the Catholic church and the Heydar Mosque in Baku; ancient Albanian temples in Gabala and Sheki, as well as the "House of Tolerance" in Icherisheher.

Thus, Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad saw with his own eyes that in Azerbaijan, representatives of all peoples and religions have historically lived as one family, in conditions of peace and mutual respect. And the important contribution of our country, as a space of tolerance and multiculturalism, to the development of interreligious and intercultural dialogue at the global level serves as an example for all.

Maintaining strategic balance

The mutual interest of the Vatican and Azerbaijan is built on a strategic balance between geopolitics, interreligious dialogue, and cultural diplomacy, where each side pursues its own global and regional goals.

Thus, for the Catholic Vatican, Azerbaijan is important as a unique country that combines the values of the East and the principles of the West. Today
