Zelensky approved a law allowing contract service for persons over 60 years old

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law allowing Ukrainians to serve in the military after reaching the age of 60.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to the Verkhovna Rada website, the law card indicates that the document has been returned with the signature of the head of state.
The law was adopted on July 16: 306 deputies voted for it in the second reading. Deputy Iryna Gerashchenko explained that this will allow contracts to be concluded with citizens over 60 years of age. At the same time, she emphasized that the text of the law does not specify who will be authorized to approve candidates for contract service, which may create conditions for abuse. These procedures are planned to be defined in bylaws that should be adopted within three months after the law comes into force.
Currently in Ukraine, men aged 25 to 60 are subject to conscription. General mobilization was announced in February 2022, and since May 2023, its rules have been significantly tightened - many benefits and deferrals have been canceled. Despite this, the authorities continue to experience difficulties with staffing the army and are looking for additional ways to attract military personnel.
Amid discussions about a possible new reduction in the conscription age (until April 2024 it was 27 years), the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced in February the recruitment of men aged 18 to 24 for contract service. They are promised high salaries, priority admission to universities, and other social benefits. However, service in infantry brigades on the front line is a mandatory condition.
