The shelves of American stores are empty
Powerful winter storm has covered most of the US, causing food shortages in stores.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Mash, Americans are actively posting photos of empty shelves, with perishable fruits and vegetables, including bananas, especially disappearing due to transportation uncertainties.
Storm warnings have been declared in regions where more than 180 million people live, with a state of emergency introduced in 20 states. The storm, which began on Friday, January 23, reached its peak on Sunday.
More than 15 thousand flights have been canceled at airports, and almost 170 thousand homes and businesses remain without electricity, mainly in Louisiana and Texas. The last time the United States faced such a large-scale winter storm was five years ago.
In New York, half-meter snowdrifts are possible, which could paralyze traffic due to a lack of snow removal equipment. Weather conditions will last at least until Monday.
The situation is exacerbated by abnormally low temperatures for winter: in some states, the thermometer drops to –17 °C, and in Washington, for the first time in 35 years, negative temperatures are expected throughout the week, Bloomberg notes.
