The European Union condemns Iran's attacks on Azerbaijan and other countries in the region
The European Union has strongly condemned Iran's drone strikes on Nakhchivan, calling attacks on civilian infrastructure unacceptable and warning of the risk of further escalation of the conflict beyond the Middle East.
This was stated by the official spokesperson of the foreign affairs service, Anwar al-Anouni, in response to a question from the European bureau of Report at a press briefing in Brussels.
"We condemn Iran's indiscriminate strikes on the Persian Gulf countries, Turkey, as well as Azerbaijan," he emphasized.
Al-Anouni also recalled that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas contacted Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to express the European Union's full solidarity with the government and people of the country, as she herself reported the day before.
"The drone attacks on the territory of Azerbaijan and its civilian infrastructure are completely unacceptable. They represent a further escalation by Iran and increase the likelihood of the war spreading beyond the Middle East," the EU representative noted.
For her part, another EU foreign affairs service spokesperson, Anita Hipper, declined to comment on the possible impact of the situation on the peace process between Baku and Yerevan, an important component of which is the creation of a corridor between the main territory of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through the territory of Armenia. At the same time, she emphasized that the European Union continues to support the normalization of relations between the two countries.
"We have clearly expressed our support for the process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and have been working with both sides and international partners for many years to create conditions for lasting peace," she stated.
In an informal conversation with Report, EU sources noted that the situation around Iran is developing extremely dynamically, which is why European officials are trying to refrain from commenting.
"Both official spokespersons and senior officials are seeking to avoid any detailed comments. However, concern about the overall situation, particularly regarding Azerbaijan, which is in close proximity to the 'hotspot,' remains quite high," the agency's interlocutor said.
