iPhone 18 Pro may get Elon Musk's 5G satellite connectivity
Some iPhone models that will be released next year may receive support for full-fledged 5G satellite internet. According to The Information, Apple plans to implement the ability to connect to 5G networks that are independent of ground infrastructure, including satellite systems, in future smartphone models. This will allow devices to gain full internet access directly through satellite.
If the predictions are confirmed, the first devices with full satellite 5G support will most likely be the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the expected foldable iPhone. The regular iPhone 18 version with this feature may appear later - presumably in March 2027.
Currently, there is no commercial service that provides full 5G internet directly to a smartphone via satellite. The existing satellite functions in iPhone 14 models and newer are limited to SOS capabilities, the "Find My" app, "Messages," and roadside assistance. Similar limitations exist for Starlink service, which works in partnership with T-Mobile - both technologies require a clear view of the sky.
It's worth noting that iPhones are already capable of providing high-speed internet connection via satellite, but this requires using an external Starlink antenna that creates a local Wi-Fi network. In the US, Starlink services cost from $50 per month for 50 GB of traffic to $165 for unlimited access. The portable Starlink Mini antenna sells for $299. Apparently, Apple's long-term goal is to provide users with the ability to connect to full satellite 5G without the need for external equipment.
Currently, Apple collaborates with Globalstar, which implements iPhone's satellite functions, while Starlink is owned by SpaceX. Analysts point to four indirect signs that may indicate renewed negotiations between Apple and SpaceX, despite previous disagreements.
These signs include SpaceX's support for the radio frequency spectrum used by Apple, rumors about a possible sale of Globalstar for a large sum, as well as a warning in Globalstar's latest quarterly report about the risk of serious financial losses if they lose a key client, which experts believe is Apple. However, it remains unknown whether Apple and Elon Musk will be able to fully resolve their past differences.
