Due to bird flu, a mass die-off of elephant seals has begun
Scientists are concerned about the possible spread of the H5 avian flu strain on subantarctic islands belonging to Australia. A mass die-off of elephant seals has begun there, reports Mirage news.
On Heard Island, a volcanic island where wildlife is monitored, unusual cases of mortality among elephant seals - large members of the seal family - have been noted. These animals show signs of illness that may indicate infection with the H5 virus. At the same time, other species, including penguins and seabirds, do not demonstrate similar symptoms. Final conclusions will be made after analyzing samples that will be delivered to Australia in mid-November.
It is noted that Australia is currently the only continent free from this type of avian flu. However, considering that Heard Island is located 4000 kilometers southwest of Perth, the probable outbreak does not yet threaten the mainland part of the country.
