Named the plant that can protect the brain from aging

Scientists from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul have found that extract of American basil can protect the brain from age-related changes, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.
The research results were published in the journal Nutrients.
In an experiment on rats, scientists studied the effect of the supplement on the hippocampus - the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning. The extract reduced the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) - aggressive molecules that damage cells, especially neurons. Excess ROS causes oxidative stress, disrupting the transmission of nerve signals.
In addition, the use of the extract prevented the destruction of cell membranes in the hippocampus and reduced the level of inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-1β, which, when chronically elevated, contribute to neuroinflammation and accelerated brain aging.
Biochemical analysis showed a high concentration of antioxidant phenolic compounds, including rosmarinic and chlorogenic acids. According to the authors of the study, these substances provide a neuroprotective effect.
Scientists note that American basil extract could become the basis for functional dietary supplements and nutraceuticals. Additional research is needed to calculate the optimal dosage and form for humans.
