A dangerous anomaly discovered on Earth
The South Atlantic Anomaly - an area of weakened Earth's magnetic field - has significantly increased in size in recent years. This is the conclusion reached by specialists from the European Space Agency (ESA) based on the results of a recent study.
Since 2014, the area of the anomaly has expanded considerably and is now comparable to approximately half the territory of continental Europe.
"Scientists have established that the region of weakened Earth's magnetic field over the South Atlantic, known as the South Atlantic Anomaly, has since 2014 increased to a size approaching half the area of Europe," the report states.
According to researchers, this change is associated with the uneven expansion of the weakened magnetic field zone toward Africa.
ESA notes that the South Atlantic Anomaly causes concern not only among space research specialists but also among satellite communications operators and energy systems operators. Within this zone, satellites are exposed to increased radiation, which increases the risk of failures and damage to important equipment.
It is reported that cases of electronic failures on board spacecraft have already been recorded, and potential threats to energy networks located in this region have been noted.
