Named one of the most underestimated factors in reducing lifespan
Lack of night rest can reduce life expectancy no less significantly than classic risk factors. This conclusion was reached by researchers from Oregon University of Health and Science, after analyzing CDC data and life expectancy indicators for 2019-2025.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to the journal SLEEP Advances, scientists studied data from tens of thousands of people to assess the relationship between the prevalence of insufficient sleep (less than seven hours per day) and longevity levels. Regions where a higher percentage of residents slept poorly consistently showed lower life expectancy rates - and this was observed every year of the study.
Even taking into account the influence of key risk factors - smoking, diet quality, and low physical activity - the connection between lack of sleep and reduced life expectancy remained significant. Only smoking is comparable to sleep deprivation in terms of impact. Moreover, this trend persisted in all types of regions, regardless of population income, healthcare accessibility, or level of urbanization. This shows that sleep is a universal health indicator.
Researchers remind that proper night rest is critically important for the functioning of the cardiovascular, immune, and nervous systems. Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts blood pressure regulation, metabolism, and cognitive functions, increasing the risk of diseases and accidents that can cause premature death.
