Brazilian researchers have discovered a link between moderate consumption of dark chocolate and improved cardiovascular indicators. Additionally, the product may have a positive effect on liver health.

As reported by BAKU.WS citing the journal Nutrients, these conclusions were reached by scientists from the University of Marilia after analyzing data from a number of scientific studies.

Specialists note that heart diseases and metabolic liver disorders develop through similar mechanisms. These include chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, as well as disruptions in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. According to the review, plant compounds in cocoa, including epicatechin and catechins, are capable of affecting these processes. They increase the availability of nitric oxide, help improve endothelial function - the inner lining of blood vessels - and reduce the activity of pro-inflammatory signals.

In a number of clinical studies, moderate consumption of dark chocolate was associated with increased levels of high-density lipoproteins ("good" cholesterol) and reduced total cholesterol. Reports also indicated stabilization of blood pressure, improved vascular condition, and decreased markers of inflammation and liver cell damage.

However, the authors emphasize that most studies were short-term in nature. The research used dark chocolate with high cocoa and flavanol content, rather than regular sweets.

Scientists note that at present there is insufficient evidence to claim that dark chocolate directly prevents heart attacks or stops the progression of liver diseases. Nevertheless, it can be considered as an element of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation.
