Japanese scientists discovered a way to breathe without lungs
Researchers from Osaka University have proven for the first time that oxygen can be safely administered to humans through the intestine, reports BAKU.WS with reference to Lenta.ru.
As noted, the results of clinical trials published in the journal Med show that the technology of enteral ventilation - the delivery of oxygen-containing fluid through the rectum - can become a backup method for maintaining respiration in cases of lung damage or airway obstruction.
The experiment involved 27 healthy volunteers. They were administered between 25 and 1500 milliliters of a special perfluorocarbon solution capable of carrying oxygen into the intestine.
The subjects retained the fluid for an hour, with no serious side effects detected. Only moderate discomfort was noted at maximum solution volumes.
According to researchers, if the method proves to be effective, it could save the lives of patients with severe respiratory failure when traditional methods of lung ventilation prove useless.
