Scientists warned of high danger of electric scooters for children
U.S. hospitals are recording a surge in serious injuries among children using electric scooters, e-bikes, and other micromobility devices. In some cases, such rides end in death. Scientists have warned parents about the dangers of this type of transport. The work was published in the journal JAMA Surgery.
"We are seeing an alarming increase in cases of severe injuries in children who were riding electric scooters and e-bikes," said Brianna Emr, director of the pediatric trauma division at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. "It's important for parents to understand the risks before allowing a child to ride them."
According to the specialist, the most dangerous cases occur when a child is hit by a car - most often on the way to school, on the sidewalk, or on the roadway.
"Many ride with headphones, some are texting, getting distracted - and in those ten seconds of inattention, they don't notice the car in time," explained Emr.
Speed makes injuries particularly severe: while a regular bicycle travels at 10-15 km/h, electric scooters and e-bikes can reach up to 30 km/h and higher.
"Children are getting injuries that we previously only saw after motorcycle accidents," concluded the doctor.
Among the typical consequences are traumatic brain injuries, fractures of ribs, arms and legs, and damage to internal organs. Sometimes children fall due to bumps or potholes - the small wheels of scooters don't handle uneven roads well. There are also battery fires that lead to burns.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not allowing children under 16 to ride electric scooters. Emr notes that even older teenagers are not always ready for such responsibility.
Before each ride, according to the expert, it's important to check the brakes, headlights, and wheels, use reflective elements on clothing, and turn on lights during dark hours.
"Don't listen to music, don't text on your phone while riding, and always slow down if you see an obstacle or a pothole," added Emr.
