Experts made a troubling statement about bananas
Bananas are at risk of extinction due to climate change
According to a new study, the world's fourth most important food crop - the banana - is facing a serious threat. The reason is climate disruptions affecting Latin American and Caribbean countries, which account for up to 80% of global exports of this fruit, reports The Guardian.
A report by the charity Christian Aid warns that by 2080, about two-thirds of the land currently suitable for growing bananas in this region may become unsuitable due to rising temperatures, increasing natural disasters, and the spread of pests.
The banana is not only the most popular fruit in the world but also a vital food source for more than 400 million people, providing between 15% and 27% of their daily calories. Meanwhile, the main threat to banana cultivation comes from the climate crisis caused by countries that have nothing to do with their production.
The Cavendish variety, which dominates the global market, is particularly vulnerable to climate change. It requires stable temperatures and moderate irrigation. Storms, heat, and diseases such as black sigatoka threaten to reduce crop yields and plants' ability to photosynthesize.
