Doctor warned about the dangers of valerian

Many patients, in attempts to cope with anxiety faster, resort to a dangerous practice - they increase the recommended dosage of medications by two or even three times. This risky tactic is especially common when taking sedatives such as valerian and Corvalol. Clinical pharmacologist Alexander Ediger warns: consuming half a bottle of such preparations can provoke a heart attack.
The widely known recommendation to take "40 drops of valerian" when anxious actually contradicts the official instructions. According to medical prescriptions, the optimal dosage is half that - just 20-30 drops in a glass of water is sufficient. A similar situation is observed with Corvalol, although with intense heartbeat, increasing the dose to 40-50 drops is permissible.
Despite clear recommendations, some patients in moments of strong emotional tension may consume half a bottle of the preparation. The specialist categorically emphasizes: even during extreme anxiety or panic attack, it is unacceptable to exceed the recommended dosage, especially by several times.
- In this situation, one can experience a quite pronounced sedative effect. That is, blood pressure decreases, a semi-fainting state occurs. You can bring yourself to a heart attack this way if your heart is not ready for such exercises. Why risk by exceeding the dose? But human stupidity is boundless. And don't think that if you take a huge dose at once, you will feel better, - noted Ediger.
