Scientists have discovered that a daily serving of pistachios can become a powerful preventive measure against vision problems.

As BAKU.WS reports, a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed: just 50-60 grams of unsalted pistachios per day can significantly increase the level of protective pigments in the retina of the eye.

The experiment involved 36 people aged 40 to 70 years with low lutein content in their diet. Half of them ate pistachios daily for 12 weeks, while the other half maintained their regular diet. The "nut group" showed a noticeable increase in the level of macular pigment (MPOD), which acts as natural "sunglasses," protecting the eyes from harmful blue light.

Pistachios, despite their moderate lutein content, have a unique advantage - they contain healthy fats that promote better absorption. This is what makes them an effective and convenient snack for eye health.

Besides vision, lutein positively affects other organs: it reduces inflammation, supports brain and heart function, and even improves skin condition.

The study authors recommend including a handful of pistachios in the daily diet as a simple way to prevent age-related eye diseases, including macular degeneration - one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly.
