Taxi boycott in Azerbaijan: a real problem or groundless rumors?
Society 0

Recently, calls to boycott taxi companies have been gaining popularity on social networks. Dissatisfied citizens, referring to repeated increases in taxi service prices and revision of the legal framework, claim that the changes introduced by the Land Transport Agency of Azerbaijan (AYNA) in carriers' operations are ineffective. Some drivers, on the contrary, consider current tariffs unsatisfactory. Moreover, rumors suggest that the number of companies ceasing operations due to low tariffs is growing.

However, AYNA spokesperson Tural Orujev, in his comment to Oxu.az, refuted these claims, calling them groundless. According to him, reforms in the taxi sector have not only created a competitive environment in the market but also stimulated qualitative changes.

"As a result of improving the legislative framework and implemented reforms, positive changes are being observed. The taxi service sector is being regulated, a professional labor market is being formed, and service quality is improving," he explained.

Today, more than 23,000 vehicles have already received electronic permits for use as taxis. Notably, about 40% of them are vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2024. Additionally, AYNA continues to actively receive new applications for permits.

Regarding trip costs, according to T.Orujev, prices are set by operating taxi companies under competitive conditions based on supply and demand.

"Along with issuing permits, taxi driver training is actively being conducted in Azerbaijan. At present, more than 36,000 people have already completed the necessary courses," concluded the spokesperson.
