It has become known why strict diets lead to weight gain

Severe calorie restriction and switching exclusively to salads can have the opposite effect: the body begins to store fat, perceiving such nutrition as a signal of hunger.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Level Kitchen, dietitian and nutritionist Tatiana Meshcheryakova explained why strict diets do not contribute to long-term weight loss.
"With a sharp reduction in calories, the body switches to energy-saving mode and slows down metabolism. Instead of losing weight, a person may gain weight even from a minimal amount of food," the expert notes.
Meshcheryakova warns that a diet consisting only of vegetables leads to a deficiency of protein, vitamins, and microelements, which affects health, energy levels, and emotional state. With a lack of protein, the body begins to use muscle tissue, which further slows down metabolism.
The dietitian also points to the "yo-yo effect": after returning to normal eating, weight not only recovers but often exceeds the initial weight. Therefore, according to the specialist, instead of short-term diets, one should change their lifestyle as a whole.
To achieve benefits, Meshcheryakova advises a balanced diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grain products, lean meat and fish, portion control, and limiting sweets and fast food. One should eat regularly - every three to four hours, maintaining water balance.
The dietitian recommends combining proper nutrition with physical activity: aerobic exercise three times a week and strength training twice a week, as well as managing stress, getting enough sleep, and surrounding oneself with supportive people.
"No diet solves the weight problem forever. Only a comprehensive approach and lifestyle changes give sustainable results," concludes Tatiana Meshcheryakova.
