Asteroid "City Killer" is heading towards Earth: not much time left until impact
Recently, scientists discovered a space rock nicknamed "city killer." Its diameter is about 50-70 meters, and the impact force is comparable to the most powerful explosion with a yield of millions of tons of TNT - enough to wipe an entire city off the face of the Earth, as reported in a Ren TV segment.
Initial calculations instilled fear: the probability of collision with Earth, scheduled for December 22, 2032, reached a record 3.1%. However, the latest observations from the James Webb telescope allowed scientists to rule out the possibility of falling to Earth - the probability is now zero. But there's a 3.8% chance that the asteroid could fall on the Moon; this event would become a unique scientific experiment with the opportunity to observe crater formation in real-time.
The current situation is the result of coordinated work by the international community: NASA, ESA, and other agencies actively track such objects and work on technologies capable of protecting Earth - from methods of kinetic impactor strikes to the practically tested drift of a space body's trajectory.
Currently, there is no danger of impact, but asteroids of this class are a reminder that it's important for us to develop an early detection system and readiness to protect the planet, as even a small space body can cause destruction comparable to a powerful explosion.
