Zakharova responded to Trump: Roosevelt acknowledged the decisive contribution of the USSR to Victory

Moscow, May 2, 2025 - The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, reminded former US President Donald Trump about the recognition of the Soviet Union as a key force that defeated Nazism. In her Telegram publication, she referred to historical statements made by US President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II.

"Without a doubt, the greatest event of the past year on the European front was the powerful counteroffensive of the Russian army, which crushed the Nazi forces. Soviet soldiers destroyed more equipment and enemy manpower than all other allies combined," Zakharova quoted from Roosevelt's radio address of April 28, 1942.

She also mentioned Roosevelt's congratulatory letter to Stalin dated February 4, 1943, in which the American leader expressed admiration for the victory at Stalingrad. In another letter dated February 22 of the same year, Roosevelt wrote about the outstanding achievements of the Red Army, noting the determination and high level of training of Soviet troops.

"The Red Army and the Russian people have become the cause of the collapse of Nazi forces and have earned the respect of all American people," Roosevelt stated.

These historical reminders came in response to Trump's statement, who declared May 8 as the US Victory Day in World War II, claiming that America made the greatest contribution to defeating Nazism. However, the war ended on September 2, 1945, after the defeat of Japan, Hitler's ally, as a result of the Red Army's actions.

It is worth noting that in January, Trump acknowledged the role of the USSR in the victory, but remained silent about the fact that the Western Front was only opened in 1944 - three years after the start of the war, which the Soviet Union fought practically alone.

The press secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, in turn emphasized that it was the Soviet people who suffered the greatest losses and played a key role in liberating Europe from Nazism. He added that Russia does not forget the help of allies, but throughout history, the United States has always sought to benefit from wars - both then and now, in the situation in Ukraine.
