Mukhtar Babayev called for uniting Baku, Belém, and Antalya around a common climate goal
Azerbaijan consistently advocates for ensuring that the voices of countries most affected by the climate crisis, including small island developing states, are not only heard but also find real reflection in global climate policy.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Report, this was stated by the representative of the President of Azerbaijan on climate issues Mukhtar Babayev at the Pre-COP31 event organized in Fiji jointly with Tuvalu and Australia.
According to him, it is especially important to ensure that the specific vulnerabilities of small island developing states (SIDS) receive due attention on the international agenda, and that these countries themselves receive the necessary support in overcoming the challenges they face.
"The first decade of the Paris Agreement has already concluded. At COP29, we fully launched its implementation cycle, and at COP30, we achieved further progress. All ambitious goals and mechanisms ensuring their fulfillment are already in place. The next decade must become a stage of real implementation," Babayev stated.
He noted that COP31 is positioned as a conference focused on the implementation of adopted decisions. The main attention of the presidency is focused on the principles of dialogue, consensus, and action, while the Action Agenda links the fulfillment of commitments with financing, energy, resilience, industrialization, and other areas.
Babayev added that for the full implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs), along with other means of implementation, it is necessary to ensure appropriate financing.
According to him, COP31 should maintain the momentum generated by the results achieved at COP29 in the area of climate financing.
Babayev also emphasized the need to unite Baku, Belém, and Antalya around a common goal.
