WhatsApp will add a function to protect against scammers
WhatsApp will introduce a feature that warns users if during a video call with an unknown person they attempt to enable screen sharing. A similar security measure will also appear in Facebook Messenger, reports 9to5Mac.
This update is aimed at combating a common fraud scheme where scammers pose as employees of banks, airlines, or other companies. They create fake profiles of well-known brands, contact users who have left comments on official pages, and under the pretext of helping convince them to enable screen sharing.
This approach allows scammers to gain access to confidential data - usernames, verification codes, and other information that can be used to change passwords or log into online services.
Meta noted that when suspicious activities are detected, artificial intelligence will warn the user about a possible scam attempt and offer protection options - for example, blocking the suspicious account or sending a complaint.
The company reminded users of the need to exercise caution when communicating with strangers. Users are advised not to share personal and financial data, avoid clicking on third-party links, and seek help only through official support channels. Additionally, insistent demands to act immediately or keep the conversation secret should be considered as signs of possible fraud.
