Vegetable shortage begins in European country

The United Kingdom is experiencing a shortage of certain vegetables, caused by prolonged drought and abnormally high temperatures. Extreme weather conditions have already led to a decline in crop yields and a noticeable rise in prices for agricultural products.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to The Guardian, even farmers who have irrigation systems and water reserves are facing difficulties in growing vegetables. Against this backdrop, wholesale prices for tomatoes have risen by more than 60%, lettuce has increased in price by nearly 90%, and the cost of potatoes has gone up by over 40%.

Due to unfavorable weather, the country has seen reduced harvests of wheat, potatoes, tomatoes, olives, and English peas. The United Kingdom is already forced to purchase broccoli and cauliflower from Spain and the Netherlands, and some farmers are considering switching to more heat-resistant crop varieties.

Representatives of the largest British retail chains have warned the authorities that extreme heat and wildfires could jeopardize the country's food security. Food producers and suppliers have urged the government to pay more attention to developing domestic agriculture and to reduce dependence on imports.
