The US Senate voted to tighten sanctions against Russia and Iran

The United States Congress Senate voted in favor of a bill to tighten American sanctions against Russia and Iran.

The vote was broadcast live on the website of the upper chamber of the U.S. Congress.

86 senators voted in favor of the initiative, while 11 voted against. The House of Representatives is expected to consider the document in September. In the lower chamber, some lawmakers may oppose the bill due to yet another increase in customs duties that it provides for.

On August 7, senators also rejected an amendment that would have stripped the U.S. President of the authority to impose customs duties on countries importing oil or gas from Russia.

The vote took place before senators departed for five weeks of summer recess.
