Macron became the first Western leader to visit Syria after the overthrow of Assad
French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus.
As reported by Reuters, the French leader became the first head of state representing the European Union to visit the country since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime by rebel forces in 2024.
The current visit of the French delegation underscores the geopolitical shifts in Syria's international relations under the new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
According to information from French and Syrian official sources, the purpose of Macron's visit is to discuss regional security issues as well as to assist in the reconstruction of state infrastructure.
It is noted that the Syrian side is actively working to overcome the consequences of the devastating civil war that lasted more than 13 years. The new Cabinet of Ministers' course toward rapprochement with key international partners is intended to definitively bring Syria out of its years-long isolation.
