Large reserves of rare semimetal discovered in Iran

A significant geological discovery has been made in Iran – impressive deposits of antimony, a valuable semimetal with a wide range of applications in modern industry, have been found. According to the Iranian organization for mine development and modernization, this strategic resource is used in the medical sector, electronics industry, production of fire-resistant materials, and many other fields. Information about the discovery was distributed by the Iran Press news agency, which is a partner of the international TV BRICS network.
Extensive geological exploration work, which continued for a whole decade, culminated in the discovery of approximately 7 thousand tons of antimony. The official statement clarifies that the main reserves are concentrated in the southeastern provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan. Experts predict that this discovery will become a catalyst for strengthening the economic potential of the Islamic Republic.
Antimony is known for its unique properties and finds application in medical practice for the treatment of various parasitic diseases, including leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis. Interestingly, in ancient civilizations, this semimetal was actively used as a component in cosmetic products.
It is noteworthy that the deposits discovered in southeastern Iran constitute about 10 percent of the world's total antimony reserves. Currently, China holds the leading position in the production of this strategic semimetal.
