Brooke Johnson made history as the first woman to cross the USA on a skateboard

Brooke Johnson made history as the first woman to cross the USA on a skateboard.
The 29-year-old athlete began her journey at Santa Monica beach in California, and after 119 days and 3,266 miles completed her historic feat in Virginia Beach on Friday.
Johnson embarked on this grueling adventure to raise funds for Wings for Life, a non-profit spinal cord research foundation, in honor of her late stepfather Roger, who, according to her, broke his fifth cervical vertebra, became a quadriplegic, and died from a spinal cord injury last year.
Despite adverse weather conditions, difficult terrain, and holes in her shoes, Johnson overcame all obstacles, raising $50,000 and setting a new world record.
Johnson told WVEC that the presence of her late stepfather helped motivate her throughout the journey.
"He was like supporting me throughout this whole journey - it's really incredible," she said.
Before his death, Johnson shared that they dreamed of crossing the finish line together - her on a skateboard, pushing her stepfather in a wheelchair.
"I said, 'Roger, this is really a big country.' And he replied, 'Well, you can do it,'" Johnson recalls.
When Brooke crossed the Red Bull finish line on Friday, she was wearing a heart-shaped necklace with Roger's ashes inside.
"Roger left me with a purpose, and I thank him for that every day," she said.
