A new president of Iraq has been elected
The Council of Representatives (parliament) of Iraq voted to elect the candidate from the "Patriotic Union of Kurdistan" Nizar Amidi as the new president of the Arab republic.
This was reported by the Iraqi agency INA.
According to its information, 227 deputies voted for his candidacy, the second candidate - Muthanna Nadir - received 15 votes, and 7 ballots were declared invalid. It was previously reported that the incumbent president of the country, Abdul Latif Rashid, had decided to withdraw from the presidential race.
The 57-year-old Amidi served as Iraq's Minister of Environment in 2022-2024 and worked for more than 15 years in the country's presidential administration, including positions as senior advisor and head of the presidential office.
