Why we compare ourselves to others and how it affects confidence

Comparing ourselves with others is a natural process that accompanies each of us. Even in childhood, we notice who runs faster, studies better, or receives more attention.
Over time, this habit doesn't disappear but merely takes new forms: we compare appearance, career, income level, relationships, and even happiness.
On one hand, comparison can be useful. It helps us navigate society, understand what to strive for, and see examples for inspiration. A person who observes others' achievements sometimes gets motivation to develop and improve their own life.
But this habit has a downside. Comparison often leads to feelings of inadequacy and decreased confidence. It becomes especially dangerous in the era of social media, where people show only the best aspects of their lives. This creates an illusion that others have everything perfect, while we constantly lack something.
The problem is that we only see the external picture, not knowing what difficulties and doubts are hidden behind beautiful photos and successes. When a person constantly puts themselves in the position of being "worse than others," their self-esteem begins to fall. Anxiety, envy, and the feeling that they will never be good enough emerge.
To reduce the negative impact of comparison, it's important to learn to shift focus. Instead of measuring yourself by others' standards, it's worth paying attention to your own path. Each person develops at their own pace, and you should only compare today's version of yourself with yesterday's. This approach helps notice personal progress and, therefore, strengthens confidence.
Comparison is inevitable, but it can be turned into a tool for development rather than a source of self-dissatisfaction. Everything depends on what conclusions we draw and how we use the impressions we receive.
