Scientists warn about the dangers of scrolling through social media feeds before sleep
It turns out that the habit of scrolling through social media feeds before bed can have serious health consequences. A large-scale study by Norwegian scientists, published Monday in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry, revealed a troubling connection between using gadgets in bed and sleep quality. The study involved more than 45,000 young people aged 18 to 28.
During their scientific work, specialists from Norway discovered a shocking fact: each hour spent with a phone before sleep literally "eats up" 24 minutes of precious rest. Even more alarming was the conclusion that this habit increases the likelihood of developing insomnia by a whole 59%. Medical statistics are relentless: people suffering from insomnia or chronic sleep deprivation are significantly more likely to face serious diseases, including cardiovascular pathologies, diabetes, and hypertension.
Notably, the negative impact on sleep manifested regardless of the specific way the smartphone was used. Whether it was communicating via messengers, watching videos, or reading news - the result remained the same: deterioration of sleep quality and reduction of its duration.
