Scientists revealed which weather changes increase the risk of heart attack
Extreme weather conditions—heat, cold, and heavy rainfall—can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, by 1-5%. This is the conclusion reached by scientists from China. The results of the study were published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM).
The study covered health data of residents from 157 cities in China over the period from 2015 to 2020. The analysis showed that at temperatures above 38°C, the risk of heart problems increases by approximately 3%. Cold weather (6°C and below) also increased the risk, although less markedly—by less than 1%.
Heavy precipitation turned out to be an additional factor: on days when more than five centimeters of rain falls, the likelihood of cardiovascular complications increases by nearly 2%.
According to one of the study's authors, Xiamen University researcher Lingjiang Wei, the body reacts acutely to sudden weather changes, which can trigger overload of the cardiovascular system. These findings are supported by other data: environmental factors are already linked to approximately one in five cardiovascular disease deaths worldwide.
Certain population groups turned out to be particularly vulnerable: people below retirement age, smokers, and people who are overweight. The risk was also elevated among those living in rural areas or in regions with higher levels of air pollution.
Scientists note that against the backdrop of climate change, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, which amplifies their impact on health. According to a report by The Lancet, the majority of days with abnormal heat in recent years are indeed linked specifically to global warming.
The study's authors recommend reducing physical activity during periods of extreme heat or cold, drinking more water, staying indoors in a comfortable temperature environment when possible, and carefully monitoring one's well-being. If alarming symptoms appear, medical attention should be sought.
