Scientists investigated a glacier on a remote island and were horrified
Scientists have raised the alarm due to the rapid melting of a glacier on Heard Island, located in the Southern part of the Indian Ocean (to the southwest of the Australian mainland). This is reported by The Guardian.
Scientists have found that over the past 70 years, the glacier on the island has lost 25% of its volume. During the period from 1947 to 2019, the temperature on the island increased by 0.7°C, and the ice cover area during this time decreased from 289 to 225 sq. km. The most significant reduction is observed on the Stephenson Glacier.
On the neighboring Lawrence Peninsula, the glacier area has decreased from 10.5 to 2.2 sq. km. Researchers emphasize that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is necessary to preserve biological diversity in these land areas, which are home to large colonies of penguins.
