Natural Effective Remedy for Improving Potency Named
Taking saffron capsules twice a day for four weeks can improve erectile function in men. Iranian researchers came to this conclusion. The experiment showed that taking the supplement improved not only erection indicators but also most other parameters of sexual function - except for orgasm. The work is published in the Herbal Medicines Journal (HMJ).
Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world, obtained from the stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower. Its components - crocin, crocetin, safranal, and picrocrocin - have repeatedly been the subject of study due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Individual studies have also indicated the potential effectiveness of the spice for anxiety, sleep disorders, and decreased appetite.
The authors of the study - a group led by Mohammad-Rafi Bazarafshan - decided to check whether saffron could improve the condition of erectile dysfunction.
The biologically active substances of the plant affect the neurotransmitters of the central nervous system, improve blood flow in the genital area, and also stimulate the production of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which increases libido.
The study involved 24 men over 18 years of age with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. The average age of volunteers was about 36 years. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: the first took capsules with 15 mg of saffron twice a day, the second received no treatment. Before and after the experiment, the men completed a standard sexual function questionnaire.
After four weeks, all indicators of erectile function in the saffron group improved. Significant improvement was also noted in sexual desire and satisfaction with sexual intercourse. In comparison with the control group, all changes were statistically significant, except for orgasmic function.
"The results showed that saffron can affect all components of erectile dysfunction. Given the safety of this herbal supplement, it can be considered as a means to restore sexual activity," the authors concluded.
