Methods for detecting deadly cholera revealed

Doctor of Medical Sciences, infectious disease specialist Vladimir Neronov explained how cholera differs from other intestinal infections and why it is considered deadly dangerous. He revealed the details in a conversation with "Lenta.ru".
According to the specialist, unlike salmonellosis, shigellosis or rotavirus, cholera causes extremely rapid dehydration, as the disease is accompanied by intensive watery diarrhea.
"A person can lose up to a liter of fluid per hour due to the action of the cholera toxin, which forces intestinal cells to uncontrollably release water and electrolytes. The particular danger of the infection lies in its high contagiousness, rapid progression, and significant risk of fatal outcome in the absence of treatment," noted Neronov.
He specified that the first symptoms of cholera are profuse watery diarrhea without pain and abdominal cramps. Just a few hours after its onset, vomiting may also occur. As a result, dehydration sets in quickly, with signs including thirst, decreased urination, and sunken eyes. In severe cases, seizures, arrhythmia, and loss of consciousness are possible.
